I can definitely see how DRM drives people to it though, especially if they don't own as many games as I do to take my mind off the anti-consumer behaviors of some publishers. Me, I don't pirate, I complain about the excessive copy protection because I *WANT* to buy these games.

Maybe they figure that if they have to crack a game they bought to get rid of the scamware they may as well just pick it up cracked and free? Seems like a reasonable position to have. All lame excuse are only to justify their annoying behaviour. I saw legit example in this forum, GTX10, but still pirate this game.

Oh well, in any case, pirates will pirate, and it's actually a good thing to have a post like this to remind about save compatibility (not just for the pirates, it's also valid if you want to give your save to someone). Most of the pirates that still want to claim to have a good consience will buy the game when it's inevitably on sale and say "see, I paid for it in the end", paying a fraction of the price and still not having to wait. Steam's sales happen frequently, and it's quite often that you see 40% off and above even less than a year after the release, and usually the game is in a better state than at launch because patches have been issued since release too. Sadly though, even among the people that claim to do it to "test" the game, the vast majority are going to point out any excuse to actually play until they are satisfied.

I do agree that there are people that can't legally buy the game (it used to be a big thing with games for windows live for example), so for them it's a non-issue as they will be regarded as outlaws either way, so why pay for the priviledge. The people that really couldn't afford the game, it used to be a somewhat valid reason, but now most of that group becomes "people that have very little money, but use that as an excuse to not wait for a massive 70-80% sale a few years later"

I wouldn't even put 2 and 3 as a majority group, 1 and 4 is likely much larger.

You forgot 4: The pirates who pirate because they can, totally have the money to afford buying the game and would buy it were it the only option. Those people will use pirated versions as an extended demo, if they don't buy the game from that then they weren't going to buy the game in the first place and if they do buy the game then that's a gained sale that might've otherwise not happened.Įdit: Here's the three major types of pirates.ġ:The people who pirate because they simply can't afford the game otherwise or it is not avalible to them.Ģ:The people who pirate because they have little money and are unsure if they want to spend the money on the game while also finding the two-hour test period and the demo is just not enough to get a good impression.ģ:The pirates who pirate because they can, a vast majority of which wouldn't buy the game anyways. Originally posted by Draconic Creature:For anyone who's about to whine and accuse of encouraging piracy, pirates are gonna pirate and not everyone will feel the demo that's present is enough of a test to justify a purchase.
